The Tanuki is a Japanese raccoon dog, which is different from a typical raccoon. In Japanese culture, Tanuki are known to be clever tricksters that find joy in pranking humans. They carry around a bottle of sake because they like to drink and party. They also carry a bag of I-owe-yous (leaves) they give their victims when they pay for things; once they leave the store the money turns back into leaves.

Japanese Businesses will often put Tanuki statues in front of their shops for 2 reasons. 1) Tanuki bellies are very large symbolizing abundance and success. 2) To discourage actual Tanukis, who think the shop owner has recently been visited by a fellow Tanuki, making it more difficult to trick the shop owner. 

They also have a huge scrotal sac they use as a tool to fly, shape shift, or as shelter. The Tanuki's large ball sac have nothing to do with sex, much like their belly, it represents wealth and luck. Since they can stretch their scrotal sac, they can also stretch money to last as long as they need. 

The Tanuki in this work is holding an Omamori (Amulet) which in Japanese culture can represent a wide range of charms. Real Omamori contain sacred papers that are blessed by Shinto Priests. The Omamori charm in this work is meant to protect against scammers.

The large Torii gate behind the Tanuki is symbolic of the entrance from a mundane life to a higher realm, in our case, the entrance to a Hedera enabled web3. At the top of the gate is kanji that reads "Tanuki".
